HYGGE

Hygge (pronounced hYOOguh) is a word that has intrigued me this winter.  It’s Danish, and translated means “cozy”.  However, I think it’s a difficult concept to translate into English.  It seems to be a fundamental aspect of Danish culture, and I’m not sure the word “cozy” does it justice.  Perhaps it’s more of a state of mind, or a mood, and/or an environment . . . that leaves one feeling “cozy” and “warm”, while enjoying the company of good friends or loved ones? Regardless of how it translates, it seems to me a wonderful way to embrace the winter months. Taking advantage of simple pleasures shared with loved ones.  Looking at what could otherwise seem cold, mundane and perhaps boring, and celebrating the beauty found in the ordinary.

Here’s my interpretation of hygge . . .
